Apple vs China
Last week rumors swirled that China may ban government officials and employees from using iPhones. This is the latest concern that China and US tension could be on rocky ground. China, including the regions of Hong Kong and Taiwan, is Apple’s third largest market. It is also where Apple assembles most of their products. There is some concern that the Chinese citizens could follow suit and move towards not using Apple products, specifically the iPhone.
China may be turning into a liability for US companies with manufacturing facilities in the region. We saw frustrations boil during the Covid-19 pandemic with major supply chain disruptions. This could be an opportunity to invest in small and mid-cap stocks that do not rely as much on China manufacturing. I think it is important to keep an eye on Apple and other large companies who continue moving manufacturing to US friendly countries. One possible effect is it may drive the cost of goods up if they want to maintain margins and revenue.
Disney vs Charter
Charter Communication and Disney are in a dead-lock battle over access to Disney owned ESPN, FX, and other networks. Disney wants Charter to pay additional for these networks to allow their customers to view those channels. Neither company seems willing to budge. NFL viewers will not be happy when they cannot watch games like Monday Night Football.
US Elections
Who is ready for another US presidential election? Microsoft is warning the US about the Chinese communist party’s ability to use Artificial Intelligence to influence Americans on social media like Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), etc. They have been able to generate targeted political ads and impersonating government and political spokesmen and women to influence political opinions.
